In the context of the yoga asanas, the Warrior poses demand undeniable physical power. The brute strength of the quadriceps; alignment and extension of the spine; a unquenchable fire in the belly. But yoga also teaches us that some of our most critical battles, both on the mat and out in the world, are won not with the body—but with the mind and spirit. In short: “a Warrior is more than a pose.”
This idea is the foundation of Scott Anderson’s Warrior Academy Yoga. Anderson encourages his Warriors to “pick a fight”: to find something you really believe in, then get ready to do battle on its behalf. So, whether you practice yoga once a day or once a week, it’s about more than a getting a great workout (which you will) or being surrounded by an über-diverse community of friendly bad-ass yogis (ditto there). Ultimately, it’s about turning the inner energy and physical strength you build on your mat outward—and really making it count.
With roots in power yoga, Warrior Academy Yoga (WAY) classes are designed to “up the ante”, both physically and psychologically, with a unique combination of strategic asana sequences and modern strength training techniques. The practice takes place in a heated room, set to an exceptionally eclectic soundtrack of killer tunes. Vigorous vinyasa is always followed by specialized cooling sequences designed to soothe and neutralize targeted muscle groups prior to a delicious, hard-earned savasana.
Along the way, you might be encouraged by a variety of environmental influences—the cozy warmth of the room, the wisdom of the dharma, the camaraderie of a new friend, the occasional guilty-pleasure pop song and, on rare occasions, foam bullets from a Nerf rifle. But if there’s one thing every Warrior is encouraged to take away from class, it’s a fighting chance for a brighter, more beautiful life.
